Three Cows Swept Out To Sea By Hurricane Dorian Found Alive

When Hurricane Dorian made landfall on the Outer Banks on September 6 as a Category One storm, it brought flooding rains that swept many of the animals living on the narrow chain of barrier islands out to sea. While most of the animals were believed to have perished, locals were excited to find that three cows managed to survive.

The three cows were from a group of domesticated livestock living on 1,000 acres of privately owned land on Cedar Island. Officials say the cows had to swim roughly two miles in the treacherous conditions from the storm to reach the shores of Cape Lookout National Seashore Park.

“It’s a tremendous story of how they made it,” park spokesman B.G. Horvat said. “If the cows could talk, imagine the story they can tell you of enduring that rush of water,” he added. “That must be incredible.”

Park officials are trying to locate the owner of the cows and said that they would have 30 days to come up with a plan to relocate the animals off of the island. For now, the cows appear to have a bond and are enjoying their new home.

“Ever since they found each other, they have been hanging out together,” Horvat said. “They are just grazing on the North Core Island.”
